AM. 01: Intro SAE Vowel & Consonant Sounds & Symbols:
Course Description: This course is designed to help non-native English speakers improve their pronunciation by focusing on English vowel and consonant sounds and their corresponding phonetic symbols. Through a combination of lectures, exercises, and practice activities, students will develop their ability to accurately produce and distinguish between the different speech sounds used in English.
Course Format: In this course, students will learn about the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), which is a system of phonetic symbols used to represent the sounds of spoken languages. They will be introduced to the symbols used to represent English vowel and consonant sounds and practice their pronunciation through various activities.
Throughout the course, students will learn about the different features that distinguish English vowel sounds, such as tongue position, lip rounding, and vowel length, and the different features that distinguish English consonant sounds, such as voicing, place of articulation, and manner of articulation. They will practice recognizing and producing these features to improve their pronunciation and comprehension of English speech.
Student Learning Outcomes: By the end of this course, students will have a better understanding of English vowel and consonant sounds and begin to accurately produce and distinguish between them. They will also be familiar with the IPA symbols used to represent these sounds, which will enable them to continue improving their pronunciation beyond the course.
